This information is for anyone who plans to bring apples for juicing on Apple Day at the Hassocks Community Veg Patch on Saturday 26th September 2026.

The delicious juice won’t keep for long, so we also have tips on how to make it last

longer.

What to bring on Apple Day

Size and quality

Apples can be any size and variety.

To ensure everyone can produce the freshest, most delicious juice possible, please take

note of the following:

- Apples for pressing must not be rotten and please remove any small rotten sections

of other apples.

- Please avoid bringing windfalls, especially from areas frequented by farmyard

animals or dogs.

- Since it is not feasible to clean the apple crusher and juicer between batches, do

please ensure your apples are thoroughly washed. We will have buckets for washing

and rinsing apples available on the day too.

- Please wash hands before adding apples to the apple crusher.

How many apples to bring and how much juice will you get from your apples?

If you only have a handful of apples, the juice will have to be mixed with other people's

apples. But do bring them.

Incidentally, if sour cooking-apples are pressed, you might want to add in half dessert-apples for sweetness balance or add a natural sweetener, like agave, at pasteurising

time.

A half trugful is a good amount to get your own juice from a separate pressing. But bring

as many apples as you like.

A trug, in this case, is one of those very large, floppy, often yellow, plastic garden

containers with handles.

Each trugful of apples makes approx 10-12 litres of juice.

Containers and other equipment

Essential to bring clean containers. Can be tupperware or bottles. Better to bring more

containers than less. Your apples may be juicier than you think.

If you happen to have a funnel or plastic jug for ease of transferring to bottles, please do

bring along. However, there will be some available. We just have no idea how many

people to expect.

Safety

The apple crusher and juicer will be manned (or womanned), but please keep children

away from the equipment and supervise them at all times for their safety. The same

applies to the small pond beside the shelter.
