Read on below for our Juicing Prep Guide if you're planning to bring along apples for juicing.

10am-1pm, Saturday 26th September, Hassocks Veg Patch, behind Age Concern.

Juicing Prep Guide

This information is for anyone who plans to bring apples for juicing on Apple Day at the Hassocks Community Veg Patch on Saturday 26th September 2026.

The delicious juice won’t keep for long, so we also have tips on how to make it last

longer.

What to bring on Apple Day

Apples - size and quality

  • Apples for pressing can have insect bore holes but must not be rotten apples. (Give a

  • squeeze to see if soft.)

  • Apples can be any size.

  • Give apples a very good rinse before bringing them.

Incidentally, if sour cooking-apples are pressed, you might want to add in half dessert apples for sweetness balance or add a natural sweetener, like agave, at pasteurising time.

How many apples to bring and how much juice will you get from your apples?

If you only have a handful of apples, the juice will have to be mixed with other people's

apples. But do bring them.

A trugful* of apples makes approx 10-12 litres of juice.

A half trugful is a good amount to get your own juice from a separate pressing. But bring

as many apples as you like.

*A trug, in this case, is one of those very large, floppy, often yellow, plastic garden

containers with handles.

Containers

It's essential that you bring clean containers. Can be tupperware. Better to bring more containers than less. Your apples may be juicier than you think!
